How to Get the Most Value Out of Your Laundry Detergent

Shop with laundry detergent coupons

Whether you prefer to search through mailers and fliers on a weekly basis for coupons and mail in rebates or online at your favorite coupon website, there are numerous deals to find. Popular brands will routinely provide coupons and rebates for their various products. Often when a new product line is introduced, the manufacturer will offer some type of incentive to get you to try the new product out.

Buy in bulk

Wholesalers like Costco and Sam's Club will often sell bulk quantity detergents and cleaners, potentially saving you money. Make sure to compare the package size or the number of loads you can get from each container, both for powder and liquid detergents. Ultimately, you're looking for the lowest cost per unit or cost per load when you're trying to find the best deal.

Follow the detergent directions carefully

Even if you save a few bucks on your laundry detergent purchase, if you don't pay attention to amount you should be using per load, you're potentially using too much, which will ultimately cost you money. If a liquid detergent is supposed to be dispensed in 2 oz portions, but you don't bother to measure and end up using 3 oz at a time, you're wasting 50% of the product!

Buy only detergents are on sale

Depending on how retailers and grocery stores stock up on a particular brand or product line, they may eventually be in a position where they need to move product to make room for upcoming shipments of other goods. This means that the grocery store or shop might be offering up a sale to clear shelf space, which is a good time for you to consider make a purchase and stock up.

Search online auctions for potential deals on detergent

Sellers on eBay.com will offer up all kinds of stuff, including cleaning products and laundry detergents. Doing a quick search for your favorite brand names may reveal a good deal. Make sure to evaluate any potential shipping costs to determine if the overall purchase is a better deal than what you could get otherwise at your local grocery store.

Discount and Dollar Stores

Often times, these specialty retailers will have a batch of detergent that they buy cheap from some other retailer and in term are able to offer you the consumer low prices. Check around to see what kinds of deals are out there. Even ask the shop keepers to see if they regularly get detergents to sell.

Pipes and Home Cleaning 101

In order for you to stop having to clean your drains so much, you need to be careful about what you put down there. Some people are putting grease, hair and coffee grounds into the pipes. Add soap scum to this and you have not only a messy pipe system but a clogged one as well. Cooking grease should be put into a metal or plastic container and then disposed of in the trash can. Some communities also have special instructions regarding how to dispose of oil properly. Coffee grounds can either be thrown in the trash or used as mulch for your garden. You can purchase a drain holder that covers the drain and eliminate the problem of hair and soap scum blockages.

You should clean the pipes on a regular basis. This will help keep them running normally and will stop any nasty odors from developing. One home cleaning tip is to include running the hot water after each time you use the sink. Hot water will loosen up any clogs and make the pipes run smoothly. You can also use baking soda in the drain and then run some hot water after pouring it in the pipes to get rid of any offending odors. Another great method to clean your pipes is to empty a cup of vinegar down the drain and allow it to set for half an hour. Then turn on the hot water. Vinegar contains naturally occurring acid which helps to loosen up any sludge in your pipes.

If you find that your pipes are getting clogged on a regular basis, there are some things you can do to prevent this. In fact this little home cleaning trick works on pipes, sinks and showers. Take a half a cup of baking soda, a half a cup of salt, a half a cup of vinegar and 2 quarts of boiling water. Just before turning in for the night, pour the solution of salt and baking soda down the drain. Then add the vinegar and let it sit for about a minute. Then add the 2 quarts of boiling water. If your sink has a garbage disposal, there is another trick that you can try. Take an ice cube tray and fill it half vinegar and half water. You need to have the water because vinegar by itself will not freeze. Be sure to let everyone in the household know that certain trays have vinegar in them. Once the trays of vinegar ice are frozen, turn on your garbage disposal and add the ice cubes. Vinegar is an acid which is great for cleaning garbage disposal as well as the pipes. If you absolutely cannot stand the smell of vinegar, you can just freeze a regular tray of ice cubes, pour them down your garbage disposal and then add a lemon that is sliced up. You will be surprised that your disposal and your entire kitchen smells amazing.

You can try all these great home cleaning tricks to keep your drain clean and to prevent it from clogging. Just remember that there are some things that are not made to go down any pipes or drains.

How to Clean Mirrors!

Not the most exciting topic ever, but if you've ever tried to clean a mirror you will understand how frustrating it can be. From one angle it looks clean, only for you to move across the room to see unsightly streaks or smears.

Searching the Internet can produce all sorts of weird and wonderful answers for getting the glass of your mirror to sparkle. From using scrunched up newspaper, mixing white vinegar with concoctions of chemicals, through to using coffee filters as cloths. I am sure that all of these solutions hold merit, but in actual fact achieving that desired shine is so simple...

The biggest culprit for 'dirt' on mirrors is dust, especially around the edges next to the frame. My first piece of advice is therefore to start from the middle of the mirror and work outwards. Starting at the edges is the most natural way to start your cleaning, but by doing so with a mirror you are more likely to spread the condensed dirt right across the face of the glass, making the task at hand much more difficult.

Step 1: Dust!
Using a clean dry cloth, start in the middle of the mirror and move the surface dust on the mirror to the edges. You can then go around the frame edge to clean away any loose dirt.

Step 2: Wash!
Put a tiny drop of washing up liquid in a bowl of warm water. The amount of liquid should be so minute that you simply get a couple of surface bubbles on the top of the water and nothing more, it should almost be as though there is nothing in the water. Rinse a new cloth in this water and ring it out so that it is just damp (not dripping water) and wash the surface of your mirror, again from the middle outwards.

Step 3: Dry!
This stage is vital if you want that perfect shine. Use a dry, lint-free cloth and literally dry your mirror and you've guessed it, start in the middle and work outwards.

Working in the industry that I do, cleaning mirrors is a regular occurrence for me and it was actually my window cleaner that recommended this technique to me, because after all a mirror is just glass at the end of the day.

So when you are following these simple steps think like a window cleaner: Middle then edges. Dust! Wash! Dry!

5 Ways to Cut Your Household Costs - Stain Removal

There is a huge diversity of specialist cleaning products available to tackle specific stains encountered on clothing or upholstery. Finding the appropriate product for a specific stain cannot only be time consuming, but also expensive. Most people do not realise that by utilising items commonly found in the kitchen cupboard at home, they can avoid spending money on expensive specialist stain removal products. Here are five items that are great at removing stains:

Bleach:
Most people have a bottle of bleach in the home. Bleach uses a process called "oxidisation" to remove stains from fabric. Bleach is particularly effective on white cotton items. A little dilute bleach can be dabbed on a stubborn stain on a white cotton shirt before washing. White cotton or linen items that have become discoloured over time can be rejuvenated by washing them in bleach diluted in plenty of hot water, or soaking for a few hours before washing the items as normal. The combination of bleach and sunlight is a powerful stain remover, so items treated with bleach should be hung outside in the sunshine to achieve the best stain removal effect.

Care must be taken with bleach, as it is not suitable for use on all fabrics and should never be used on delicate fabrics or dark coloured materials.

Hairspray:
Hairspray is a great stain remover for ink stains. If a child gets ink onto upholstery, the area can simply be sprayed lightly with hairspray before wiping gently with a cloth. It also works well on shirts if a pen has leaked into the pocket. A spray containing alcohol works best. A damp rag should be placed under the stain and then the hairspray should be sprayed directly onto the stained area. By blotting with a damp cloth, the stain should be lifted out of the fabric.

Methylated Spirits:
Methylated spirit is a strong solvent, and good at removing a variety of stains from fabrics. It is especially good at removing greasy food stains or stains from cosmetics, such as lipstick. The stain should be dabbed with spirit and left for five minutes before rinsing in warm water. This method should only be used on colourfast fabrics. Methylated spirit is also useful for removing felt tip pen stains.

Washing Up Liquid/Soap:
For everyday stains, the simple action of rubbing the area with a little soap or washing up liquid can be enough to break up the stain and allow it to be washed away easily in the laundry. Soap is also particularly effective on felt tip pen stains and bloodstains. Hair dye splashed on fabric is best treated with a cup of warm water containing a good squeeze of washing up liquid. Soap is also effective at removing lipstick stains from clothing.

White Vinegar:
White vinegar has a variety of cleaning applications in the home and is a fantastic stain remover. This is because the acetic acid is able to cut through grease and dirt. The best way to use white vinegar is to dilute it and put it in a spray bottle for pre-treating items before washing, such as grubby cuffs and sleeves on shirts or the underarm areas of garments. Items can also be soaked in dilute white vinegar before washing. White vinegar is also effective at removing mildew stains from clothing and shower curtains.

As you can see, many effective stain removal products can be found in the home, simply by looking in the kitchen and bathroom cupboards. These basic items can tackle a variety of commonly encountered stains, minimizing the need to purchase expensive chemical stain removal products.

The local grocery store cleaning aisle can be pretty confusing. The aisle contains assorted products such has glass cleaners, stain removers, disinfectants and all purpose cleaners. White bread cleans up shattered glass on floors and counters. It can be difficult to get all the tiniest pieces when glass is shattered,. And worse, those tiny pieces can hurt pretty bad if stepped on by bare feet. But there is a quick, easy and affordable solution that can be found in every kitchen. Ketchup cleans stainless steel sinks perfectly. Ketchup is really good at delivering a great shine to stainless steel sinks. Simply squirt ketchup into the sink and use a clean damp cloth to spread the ketchup around the stainless steel surface. Rinse with warm water and towel dry the sink.

Rice is a great coffee grinder cleaner. The oil from coffee grounds can hide in some places even when the coffee grinder appears clean,. Try using uncooked white rice in order to produce a clean, vibrant shine. For a regular blade system, add uncooked white rice up to the height of the blades. Run the grinder and dispose of the rice that will be coated in the sticky brown coffee residue.

Green tea removes odors inside a refrigerator. Use green tea leaves to deter odors in a refrigerator. Add green tea leaves to a bowl and place the bowl in the refrigerator. Even pungent odors such as garlic and onions will be absorbed by the tea leaves. Also, try rubbing hands with tea leaves to remove and absorb odors.

Club soda removes carpet stains. Attack carpet spills by blotting the stained area with club soda. Then, pour club soda over the area and scrub with a damp cloth. Red wine stains & urine stains can also be removed using this technique.

Obviously, there are plenty of foods that should never be used while cleaning around the house. It's a good idea to be cautious and never assume that all food products are effective at cleaning around the house. Benefits of Using Carpet Shampoo Machines With Hot Water Cleaning Features

Choosing the right type of carpet shampoo machines can cut down your carpet cleaning time dramatically. Carpet cleaners are used not only for spot cleaning and general maintenance of carpets at home but when large stretches of carpets and huge numbers of rugs need to be cleaned quickly and efficiently in a commercial establishment. The sad story is that while there are a number of carpet cleaners available on the market, only a handful of them are designed with the customer's convenience in mind.

Most carpet shampoo machines come with powerful and impressive cleaning powers. However, the biggest downside is that they use a lot of water which increases drying time. It can take as much as 24 long hours for even a small carpet to dry completely. Another disadvantage is that the carpets become perfect breeding places for mold and mildew as it remains damp for a prolonged period.

Machines with Advanced Features for Comprehensive Cleaning

Carpet cleaners with advanced cleaning features are now available from reputable dealers. These machines have changed the way rugs are cleaned for both residential and commercial types. Steam carpet cleaners are used extensively to clean commercial carpets but are not recommended for cleaning of heat sensitive carpets and rugs because the extreme high temperature of the steam can damage the sensitive threads of the rugs and damage them permanently. Non heated carpet shampoo machines are ideal for cleaning such carpets.

Cleaning machines with heated output improves the efficiency of the cleaning process and also speeds up the cleaning task significantly. The best heated cleaning machines are designed to deliver temperature output of up to 210°F and can remove stubborn stains and grime from commercial rugs quickly. Carpet shampoo machines also come with low flow technology which reduces the use of water drastically. This eliminates the risk of mold formation and foul odor as the rug gets dried in as little as two hours.

Hot Water Carpet Cleaners for Quick, Meticulous Cleaning

It is important to use the right type of carpet cleaning machines for different types of cleaning tasks. Rug steam cleaners for instance, are used to clean high end rugs that are heat sensitive and cannot withstand the extreme heat from powerful steam cleaners. Carpet cleaning machines equipped with heating features are perfect for cleaning rugs and carpets with heat sensitive materials and threads.

If you are looking for rug steam cleaners that clean your rugs, quickly and more efficiently than conventional carpet cleaning equipment, it is advisable to go for hot water carpet cleaners because they have the capability to clean the most stubborn of stains and grime from carpets comprehensively.

Carpet shampoo machines, that offer hot water cleaning, are able to break the bond between the dirt and the surface to which they are attached. Cleaning with conventional carpet cleaners will not break this strong bond and leave traces of dirt behind even after the rugs are cleaned. The high temperature output helps dissolve the dirt easily after which they can be easily removed from the rug surface.

Rug shampoo machines from reputable dealers can help you clean any type of carpets, rugs and upholstery with a greater degree of efficacy. They are also convenient to handle.

Before You Sign the Lease, Call a Mold Testing Company

When it comes to purchasing a home or renting an apartment, it is very important that you find out whether your potential home has a problem with mold. No one wants to live in a place where there is a life threatening problem with air quality. Even though you may not think it is that serious, simply inhaling spores can cause some serious respiratory problems later on. If you have children and pets that are going to be living with you, you want to make sure that you are moving into a healthy environment. Many owners, real estate agents and management companies will not give you a definite answer on whether or not mold is present. This is why you should leave the inspection and removal up to a certified mold testing company.

No one is saying you should have every home you are looking at should be tested, but any place you are very serious about should be looked at. Mold testing every home you like can be a bit expensive if you are not willing to weed out some of the homes yourself. Here are some things you should look for that can signal whether or not that home or apartment has a problem with mold.

Do you remember your mother flushing the toilets and looking at the pipes of any place she was interested in? There was a specific reason she did this even though she may have looked silly to you as a child. Pipes that are leaking are a sign of a potential mold problem. Look under the sinks, flush the toilets and take a look at the pipes in the basement. If you see any sign of leakage or moisture, this home may not be safe for you and your family.

Smell the air all throughout the home. If you smell a stale, musty or mildew odor, there may be some spore growth going on where you can't see it. Turn on the A/C. A lot of times mold will grow where there is moisture and the HVAC system is a big breeding ground. If you smell mildew, especially after running the air conditioner for a few moments, move on to the next home on your list.

Be on the lookout for cracked or peeling paint. Also be on the lookout for walls and ceilings that are discolored. These are all signs of an impending mold problem. If you see any rust or condensation, run don't walk out of that place.

Of course, if you see a place that you really want to purchase or lease and you suspect that there is a mold problem, you can always hire a reputable mold testing company to come and investigate. They will be able to tell you if the infestation is mild enough so it can be treated or if the infestation is so severe that the home is not safe for anyone. If you take the proper precautions now, you can avoid a lifetime of health conditions, enormous medical bills and loss of investment.

Get Rid of Grease Stains From Your Carpet

Indeed, carpet cleaning and maintenance can be a very hectic task when underestimated. Every day, as you walk around the house doing your chores, there are too many potential accidents that may occur and cause irreparable damage to your carpet. It is true that there are different types of damages that can be done on a carpet. However, one of the most common ones would be stains caused by spills. As a carpet owner you would have to deal with hard-to-remove and easy-to-remove stains every now and then. The tough stains are those that will take a lot of money, effort and time.

Actually, one of the most common of such stains would be stains caused by grease. It is true that grease originates from a variety of sources; however, the most obvious source would be that used on vehicles nowadays. Some people are well aware of how nightmarish grease stains could be when they hit the carpet. They are not only black and unsightly on the beautiful carpet, but they equally get sticky and this damages the fibers of the carpet. Nevertheless, no matter how difficult motor oil grease may appear it is not impossible to clean. You will certainly need some tips, the right tools and some patience to go through the cleaning process. Below are a few steps to follow:

Step 1; you will start by scraping off any excess grease that has settled on the carpet. This prepares the carpet for proper cleaning while keeping the stain from spreading any further. For this step, use a bread knife or a strong spoon; use this to scrape off the excess with a lot of care while making sure not to spread it to other parts of the carpet.

Step 2; after removing the excess, take a good amount of baking powder and sprinkle it over the area that has just been cleaned and then allow for 15 minutes. After the fifteen minutes have elapsed, get your vacuum cleaner and use it to absorb the baking soda. You should notice some improvement on the stained area.

Step 3: Follow the vacuuming with an application of the right carpet cleaning chemical. You may choose one that you are used to. You will want to spray this product on the affected area and then blot it out with a clean piece of cloth. This step should be repeated as often as possible, until the stain is completely removed.

Step 4; lastly, sprinkle very clean water to the affected area and use some clean towel to soak it out.

By following these easy steps you will get rid of stains that get you frustrated and ruin your beautiful carpet. A clean carpet is very important for every home.

Tips To Select a Carpet Cleaning Company

Are you confused about how to go about the selection of a carpet cleaning company? There is no denying the fact that you have to get your rugs and floor coverings professionally cleaned because this is the only way that you can get a good job done. It is simply too difficult for you to clean them on your own and that too on a regular basis.

You'll need to know how to select the best possible company to clean your carpets because you need to ensure that they are cleaned without getting damaged. One of the first things you ought to do is enquire whether a particular carpet cleaning company has sufficient experience in the business. If you have a specific type of carpet or if your floor rugs are prone to a particular type of dirt then you should check whether the company in question can deal with the problem.

The company that you hire should have the best possible equipment and it also should have employees who know what they are doing. If your rugs are very expensive then you need to be sure that they are in expert hands. The last thing that you want is a patch or discolored area on your rug where too much cleaner has been applied. Similarly, certain types of rugs do not take well to being washed and they might end up losing color after the cleaning is done.

You should always make it a point to select a carpet cleaning company that can give you personalized attention. If you have to wait a few days for getting your work done then you probably should look for an alternate company. In addition, the representative from the company should examine all your floor coverings carefully in order to determine which treatment will work best on each of them.

Money is always an important criterion when selecting a service provider. Make sure that you select a carpet cleaning company that always charges very reasonable fees. Just because a company charges you the earth does not mean that it provides you with excellent service. The simplest thing would be to make your selection after taking references from other people. If a trusted friend or a family member swears by the services offered by a particular company then you can be sure that it will do a good job on your carpets as well.

How to Get the Most Out of Your House Cleaning Service

Anyone who has his or her home or apartment regularly cleaned by a professional service crew knows how nice it is not to do the tough cleaning. But a cleaning service isn't cheap, so it pays to know a few tricks to get the most out of your crew.

Most people do a little straightening up before the cleaners arrive, but it pays to do a little more. First, if you have not yet put jewelry, cash, and other valuables out of the way, then you need to do it right away. If you've done a thorough job screening your service, the risk of outright theft is probably low. Taking things out of sight will eliminate any problems or misunderstanding, all the more.

Also try and reduce clutter around the house before the cleaners come. Kid's toys or art projects on the counters, paperwork on the kitchen table, blow dryers, and even makeup on the bathroom sink all slow things down where cleaners will just take care of them. Take a moment and put them aside so that the team can get to every spot easily.

If you want hard-to-reach areas cleaned, like behind furniture and such, move items before the cleaners come. Provide a note to direct them what you want done. In the course of normal cleaning, most services do not move furniture or heavy objects.

Be specific about how you like things cleaned and what is important to you. Most services strive to do a good and thorough job, but everyone seems to have one cleaning pet peeve or a spot they like cleaned in a certain way. Instead of being frustrated, you need to be specific. Talk with the group supervisor and show to him or her specifically where or what it is you want done and its value to you. Most cleaners will gladly adapt their routine.

While it's not necessary to leave your house or apartment while the cleaners are there, try and stay out of the way. Most cleaners have a routine they follow, so try, and avoid redirecting them to other rooms or tasks. The same goes for kids and pets. With fewer disruptions, the cleaners will do a better job.

Try not to offer cleaners food or drink, or engage in some chit-chat. While you might feel this is a polite gesture, understand that the workers are there to do their job where they need to move on to the next client, in the most efficient means. Again, the fewer the disruptions, the better cleaners can be.

If you use the same group on a regular basis, don't forget to show your appreciation. This is especially important if you've asked them to do extra work. While tipping is not required, it is appreciated. Also, don't forget the end-of-year gratuities and thanks.

Lastly and most importantly, you need to keep up with the communication. If something is not being done the way you like it, provide constructive feedback right away. Cleaners rely on pointers where they want to keep their clients happy and satisfied with their work. That being said, if the same problems keep cropping up and the work isn't being done to your satisfaction, it may be time for you to look for a new provider.

Simple and Effective Rust Removal

Wikipedia describes rust remover as "chemical solutions or primers that can be applied directly to a rusty surface on steel or iron alloy surfaces to convert initial and residual rust to barrier and adherent chemical compounds onto the surface. These chemical compounds interact with iron oxides and also protect the surface from further corrosion process. These are able to develop a protective film on the metal surface that protect against rust." Thankfully, for home improvers and DIY-ers like me we don't need to know all the science behind the process to know that rust remover just works!

Almost everyone has experienced rust in some capacity. Most of the time we see rust and we are then disappointed, thinking that it will require lots of work and the use of harsh chemicals. However, now there are products in the market that are safe and very effective. Before you buy any product, be sure to keep a few things in mind. First, you want to make sure it is safe. This is a product that you are most likely going to use in your home, perhaps near children or pets. There are many products that are non-toxic and safe. Commercial products that are harmful or scary to use are a thing of the past. It should also be something that is safe on a variety of materials. The item you may be cleaning could be made from multiple metals or finishes. Find a rust remover that is safe for metals as well as plastics or vinyl. You'll also want a product that will prevent rust in the future. Choose one that will inhibit rust for at least 4 weeks.

When you're ready to de-rust you should first clean your item. You'll want to make sure it's free from oil and dirt. Follow the manufacturer's instructions when working on the rust blemish. Some products require soaking, anywhere from 20 minutes to 24 hours, while others require circular spraying or wiping. As your working on your item be sure to be checking often, this will help you get the best results in the least amount of time.

Home repair stores and the internet are great places to purchase rust remover. However, going to the home store with its stocked shelves can often leave you a little overwhelmed and confused. For those who prefer to conduct research and shop from home, products like wholesale Evaporust may be a good option.

Hopefully, you're now ready to tackle that DIY project you've been putting off. Rust removal can be an easy, effective way to restore an otherwise overlooked treasure.

Getting Professionals for Your Window Cleaning

Any business or office space with large windows should consider hiring professionals to give them a regular and thorough cleaning. Often a business owner or manager doesn't take the time to consider the effect of unclean windows has on business. In an office, dirty windows can subtly contribute to low morale. In retail it is essential store front windows are sparkling so displays look their best and the store looks inviting.

Hiring professionals for window cleaning can be as simple as phoning a few firms and taking the lowest price. This isn't always prudent as the lowest price isn't always the best deal. Here are some simple steps to take to be sure you get it right.

Get referrals. A recommendation from someone you trust is always the preferred method of finding a service firm. If you can't manage a referral, head to the internet or phone directory to find local firms.

Research firms- A few things to look for: first, the firm should be fully insured. Check to see how long they have been in business. One can also perform a search of most firms and in many cases get reviews or determine if they have any major complaints lodged against them. In some cases, the firm may be a very small proprietorship, so it may make sense to search the owner's name to see what comes up.

Price quotations- Try and get estimates from at least three firms. The firm will need to visit the location in order to generate an accurate estimate and be sure whilst they are there you relay any specific needs or instructions you'd like carried out. You should also inquire about how they go about their cleaning and typical intervals. Some companies use power washers for outside and others traditional brush and squeegee. Also, if you are a retailer and use storefront windows for signage (either signs and posters or applied directly to the window) make sure this is discussed and acknowledged in the estimate.

Ask for references. As part of the estimate review process, ask for relevant customer referrals and follow-up. When speaking to the person with whom the firm referred you to, ask specific questions. Are they completely satisfied with the service they receive? Have they ever had any issues with the service? Does the firm keep appointments and show up regularly? Another great question is to ask if there is anything the firm could do to improve their service. This often leads to revealing comments.

Review contract. When you've determined the favored firm you'll likely be asked to sign a contract for a specific term. It is important to insist on a trial period or some way to cancel the obligation if the service is not up to your standard. Another approach is to simply go on a monthly term.

Closely monitor service during trial term. Of course a new firm will want to put its best foot forward during the initial period, but nonetheless inspect the work closely and be sure to provide feedback. This is good advice for the long term. If something is not being completed according to the contract, contact the firm immediately to rectify the problem. One should not put up with poor or substandard service. If service becomes a regular issue, it may be time to find a new firm!
